The Nilgiri region was originally inhabited by indigenous communities including the Todas. In the early nineteenth century British administrators discovered the region and began developing Ooty as a hill station.

Colonial bungalows, gardens and roads were constructed across the hills. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway later connected the region to the plains, making travel easier.

Today Ooty still retains much of its colonial charm while welcoming travellers from around the world.
